TL;DR: Good product photos need three things: controlled light, a clean background and enough time to get every angle right. A studio gives you all three in one booking, without buying lights, backdrops and a space to use them in. At GC Studio Co in Burleigh Heads, a half day self-shoot is $699 and a full day is $999, with the cyclorama wall, Godox lighting, colour-changing LEDs and props included. If you would rather hand the camera over, our team films and edits the shoot for you from $1,999, studio hire included.
What a product photography studio actually gives you
Most product photos that look "off" have the same three problems: uneven light, a busy or shadowed background, and shots that do not match from one product to the next. A studio fixes all three before you take a single photo.
- Controlled light. Our Godox studio lights with large parabolic softboxes give soft, even light that does not change with the weather or time of day. Your first shot and your last shot match.
- A clean background with no corner. The cyclorama is a curved white wall that sweeps straight into the floor, so there is no corner or seam behind your product. That means fewer shadows to fix and less clean-up in the edit.
- Consistency across a full range. Set the light once and every product in your range is shot the same way, which is what makes a store or catalogue look professional.
- Room to change the look. The colour-changing LED lighting in the ceiling and sets lets you switch the mood of the whole room in seconds, so one booking can give you clean white catalogue shots and colourful social content.
What you can do yourself, and where DIY runs out
You can get decent product photos at home. These tips help wherever you shoot:
- Use one light source. Mixing a window, a ceiling light and a lamp gives you mixed colours. Pick one and switch the rest off.
- Diffuse it. Harsh light makes harsh shadows. A sheet of baking paper or a white shower curtain over a window softens it.
- Keep the background plain. A sheet of white card curved up behind the product works on a small scale.
- Use a tripod. It keeps every shot framed the same and lets you use slower settings without blur.
- Shoot more angles than you think you need. Front, back, side, detail and in use. Online buyers cannot pick the product up, so the photos do that job.
- Edit lightly and consistently. Fix exposure and white balance the same way across the set rather than styling each photo differently.
Where DIY runs out is scale and size. A piece of card works for a candle, not for furniture, clothing on a person or a full product range in one afternoon. That is the point where hiring a studio for a few hours is usually quicker and cheaper than buying the gear.
